  • Old Testament

Creation: The book of Genesis describes God's creation of the world and humanity (Genesis 1-2).

The Fall: The story of Adam and Eve's disobedience and the subsequent introduction of sin into the world (Genesis 3).

The Promise of Redemption: Throughout the Old Testament, various prophecies and promises anticipate a future savior who would redeem humanity (Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6-7, Micah 5:2).

Covenants: God's establishment of covenants with individuals like Noah, Abraham, and the nation of Israel, outlining relationships and promises (Genesis 9, 12, Exodus 19-24).

The Law: The giving of the Ten Commandments and other laws to Moses on Mount Sinai, establishing guidelines for moral and ethical living (Exodus 20).

    New Testament

Life and Teachings of Jesus: The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) narrate the life, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Salvation through Christ: The New Testament emphasizes salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, who is regarded as the Son of God and the promised Messiah (John 3:16, Acts 4:12, Romans 10:9-10).

The New Covenant: Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is seen as the establishment of a new covenant, providing forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God for humanity (Matthew 26:28, Hebrews 8:6-13).

The Church: The New Testament epistles and Acts of the Apostles detail the early Christian church, its teachings, structure, and growth under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The Second Coming: The promise of Jesus' return and the establishment of God's kingdom (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, Revelation 22:20).

These biblical foundations form the core beliefs of Christianity, providing the basis for doctrines such as the Trinity (God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), salvation by grace through faith, the importance of love, forgiveness, and the hope of eternal life. They serve as the bedrock upon which Christian theology, ethics, and practices are built.

SE does not believe in replacement theology (Supersessionism). We believe that Christ came to fulfill the Law not abolish it according to Matthew 5:17-20. Meanwhile, the ceremonial Law can no longer be practiced, the moral and civil Law live on in Christ which is how the WORD became flesh according to John 1:1-5.

  • In Christianity, covenants refer to the agreements or promises established by God with humanity, often serving as the framework for God's relationship with people.

Some of the key covenants outlined in the Bible include:

The Covenant with Noah: Found in Genesis 9:8-17, this covenant was made after the flood. God promised never again to destroy the earth by flood and established the rainbow as a sign of this covenant.

The Abrahamic Covenant: God made several promises to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3, including a pledge to make him a great nation, to bless him, and to bless all nations through his descendants. This covenant is reaffirmed in Genesis 15 and 17.

The Mosaic Covenant: Established through Moses on Mount Sinai, this covenant (Exodus 19-24) included the giving of the Ten Commandments and the Law. It outlined the rules and regulations for the Israelites' conduct and worship.

The Davidic Covenant: God made a covenant with King David, promising an eternal dynasty and kingdom (2 Samuel 7:12-16). This covenant anticipated the coming of a descendant of David who would reign forever (fulfilled in Jesus Christ).

The New Covenant: Foretold in the Old Testament (Jeremiah 31:31-34), this covenant is established through Jesus Christ in the New Testament (Luke 22:20, Hebrews 8:6-13). It signifies forgiveness of sins, a personal relationship with God, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit for believers.

Each of these covenants represents a significant aspect of God's relationship with humanity and plays a crucial role in understanding the progression and fulfillment of God's plan for salvation through Jesus Christ in Christian theology.

  • When discussing the methodologies used for studying the bible," it's important to clarify that Jesus, as a historical and religious figure, is primarily understood through faith and spirituality rather than scientific analysis. However, historical and scientific inquiry into the life and times of Jesus can provide insights into the context of his existence and the impact of his teachings.

    Historical Analysis:

Historical research aims to understand Jesus in the context of his time and place. Scholars study ancient texts, artifacts, archaeological findings, and historical records to reconstruct the socio-cultural, political, and religious environment in which Jesus lived.

    Reliability of Texts:

The study of ancient manuscripts, particularly the New Testament Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), involves textual criticism to assess their reliability as historical documents. Scholars analyze these texts to determine their historical accuracy and the extent to which they reflect the life and teachings of Jesus.

    Cultural Context:

Understanding Jesus' cultural and religious background—being a Jewish teacher in first-century Israel— is crucial. It involves studying Jewish customs, religious practices, and societal norms prevalent during that time to contextualize Jesus' teachings and actions.

    Scientific Inquiry:

While science focuses on empirical evidence and the natural world, it doesn't directly address Jesus' divine nature or supernatural events described in religious texts (such as miracles or the resurrection).

    Indirect Scientific Exploration:

Science indirectly intersects with the study of Jesus through fields like archaeology, which can provide insights into the historical context of biblical events and locations. For instance, archaeological findings might shed light on the lifestyles, structures, and practices of ancient societies, corroborating certain aspects of biblical narratives.

    Interdisciplinary Perspectives:

Some scholars explore interdisciplinary approaches, incorporating historical, cultural, and scientific methods to gain a holistic understanding of Jesus. They might analyze ancient writings, societal structures, and scientific knowledge to explore how Jesus' teachings and actions might have influenced his followers and society at large.

In essence, while science can contribute to understanding the historical context surrounding Jesus and his teachings, the religious significance of Jesus as the Son of God, Savior, and divine figure transcends empirical analysis and falls within the realm of faith and spirituality for those who follow Christian beliefs.
